Duration: 75 MinutesParticipants: Students, Teachers, or Parents


1. Welcome and Introduction (10 minutes)

  • Objective: Set a warm, welcoming tone for the meeting.

  • Activity: Icebreaker where participants share their name and their favorite school rule or memory.


2. Book Overview (15 minutes)

  • Objective: Provide a brief overview of Second Grade Rules and its main themes.

  • Discussion Points:

    • Introduce Amber Brown and her character traits.

    • Highlight key events and challenges she faces regarding school rules.

    • Discuss how these rules relate to everyday school life.


3. Guided Group Discussion (15 minutes)

  • Objective: Facilitate a deeper understanding of the book’s themes.

  • Discussion Questions:

    • What rules does Amber find challenging, and how does she deal with them?

    • Why are rules important in a classroom setting?

    • How do Amber's friends influence her perspective on rules?

  • Format: Open discussion, allowing students to share thoughts and connect personal experiences with the story.

  • Materials Needed: Clue cards, small items to find or tasks to complete.


5. Snack Time (10 minutes)

  • Theme-Related Snacks:

    • "Amber’s Colorful Fruit Cups": Individual fruit cups with a variety of colorful fruits to represent the diversity in rules and friends.

    • "Classroom Cracker Sandwiches": Cheese and deli meat sandwiches cut into shapes of school supplies (e.g., pencils, books).

    • "Friendship Trail Mix": A mix of pretzels, chocolate chips, and dried fruits, with a label emphasizing teamwork and friendship.


6. Wrap-Up and Reflection (5 minutes)

  • Objective: Conclude the meeting by reinforcing key messages and reflections.

  • Activity: Each participant shares one rule they want to follow and how they will encourage their friends to do the same.

  • Closing: Thank everyone for their participation and encourage them to think about Amber’s story as they go about their school days.


Materials Needed:

  • Copies of Second Grade Rules

  • Scavenger hunt clues and items

  • Snack ingredients (if applicable)

  • Plates, napkins, and cups



Notes:
